Medicare Part B is medical insurance that helps cover the cost of doctor’s visits, medical supplies and outpatient visits. It also covers preventive services such as lab tests, screenings, and shots. Medicare Part B is a part of original Medicare, which also includes Medicare Part A.

How Much Does Part B Cost?

The cost of Part B largely depends on your income. Put simply, the higher your income, the more you are required to pay. Whether your single or married, is also a factor as well.

The standard Medicare Part B Premium is $174.70 in 2024. This is the cost for those who file an individual tax return and make under $103,000 a year. If you file a joint tax return and make $206,000 or less, you also pay $174.70.

If you’re having difficulty paying for Medicare, you may also qualify for programs that can help lower your costs. These programs can be offered through State Medicaid Assistance. If you qualify, these programs can help pay for your Part A and Part B deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.

What is the Medicare Part B Deductible?

The Medicare Part B deductible for 2024 is $240. Once you pay your yearly deductible, Medicare Part B will start to pay for your covered medical service. Depending on the service, you may need to pay a coinsurance as well. For example, you will likely need to pay 20% of the cost for services your doctor provides even after the deductible is paid. How Do You Know If Medicare Part B Covers What You Need?

Am I Eligible for Medicare Part B?

You qualify for Part B under these conditions:

  • Become 65 years old or older
  • Are a US resident
  • Become a US citizen or an
  • Alien that has been lawfully
  • Residing in the US for 5 consecutive years before applying

How Do I Get Medicare Part B?

You are automatically enrolled in Part B if you receive Social Security Benefits. If you are not receiving Social Security Benefits and want to enroll, you can apply in three different ways.
